Katja received her BSc and MSc in genetics (University of Helsinki) in 1998, and a joint PhD in genetics (University of Cambridge) and bioinformatics (EMBL-EBI) in 2004. Earlier in her career, she held positions at Karolinska Institutet, Wellcome Sanger Institute and the University of Cambridge. She became a research director at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) in 2019 and a vice-director (research infrastructures) at Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE) in 2020. She has studied the genetic basis of human diseases including cancer, infectious diseases, reproductive disorders, and common/complex diseases. Katja believes that advances in life science technologies will revolutionise our lives.
